Riding along in the small royal convoy was comfortable. Violet had intended to proceed to the northern wildlands with as few people as possible, but the princess would not allow others to do her business for her. Ulriana insisted that she must personally help and that meant that many royal guard came with her. Although, to her credit, she did convince many of them to stay behind.
Not happy with sitting inside the wooden box of Ulrianaâs carriage, no matter how comfortable, Jenevieve was out walking among the knights and their armored steeds. The stretchy witch was a marvel to the men in steel. She seemed to never grow tired, keeping up pace no matter how quickly the horses trotted along. Sometimes Jenevieve would even dash off and personally take in the route ahead for her own benefit, having never been in the area. Many of the royal guard were glad to have their present company while going to such an unfriendly place. Though many more were worried about having a dragon nearby.
âI canât say I understand why my men are so shaken by you, Engel,â Ulriana told him, relaxing in her lavish carriage with Violet and the little dragon. âYouâve already proven to be a friendly ally. And when youâre the size of a dog you are simply adorable.â
âI'm surprised you don't understand the tension,â Engel replied. âHumans and dragons have the most violent of histories together. In the darker times of history when war was much more common, humans were constantly fighting every race of dragon with such passion that you'd think they all had a personal grudge. Can't say I know the reason for it, though. Do you know more than I do, Violet?â
âI know some, thanks to my mother,â Violet answered. âI believe it had something to do with just a general ignorance mixed with misunderstandings. No one could understand dragons, so they were nothing more than dangerous creatures. Humans hunted them like they were rights of passage to adulthood or knighthood. Dragons couldn't speak to them so they did what came natural to anyone in such a situation: they protected themselves and their land. And when you start killing humans, honor and vengeance dictate zealous action.â
âMy, my,â Ulriana said. âI've certainly missed out on plenty of learning without my parents. I'm sure this interesting and important history would have come up at some point.â
âWhat about having a scholar from the university teach you?â Engel asked.
âI tried that for a week or so, but I didn't like how he taught,â Ulriana explained. âMy parents were much kinder and made the lessons enjoyable. I wasn't getting that from the scholar and guessed that I wouldn't get that from any other so I haven't been taught anything for a good long while.â
âWell, we'll teach you as the subjects come up then, I suppose,â Violet said.
The northern wilds were farther away than Violet had anticipated. For over a week they traveled and camped and traveled and camped. They witnessed the
